Omeprazole
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux, stomach ulcers, and conditions of excess stomach acid.
Uses & Indications
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD / heartburn)
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers
- Helicobacter pylori eradication (in combination)
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Prevention of stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs
Common Side Effects
- Headache and dizziness
- Nausea, diarrhoea, or constipation
- Low magnesium levels with prolonged use
- Increased risk of bone fractures with long-term use
- Increased susceptibility to certain intestinal infections (e.g., C. difficile)
Drug Interactions
- Clopidogrel — omeprazole may reduce its antiplatelet effect
- Methotrexate — PPIs may increase methotrexate levels
- Some antiretroviral medications — reduced absorption
- Vitamin B12 — long-term PPI use can impair absorption
Dosage Information
Typical adult dose for GERD is 20 mg once daily for 4–8 weeks. Higher doses (40 mg) are used for severe conditions. Best taken 30–60 minutes before a meal.
